I generate ideas and use the appropriate processes to realise them. I search for people that have the skills I don’t and I work with them and learn from them for new knowledge and understanding.
The magic of electricity has given us galvanised iron, super shiny chrome and gold plate even rhodium can be plated onto another metal. We can go from a flash plate to building up a thick solid metal skin.
2023 brought me to challenge myself with making and fully embracing electroforming: a process I have historically hated, as I have considered it a big fat cheat!
Welcome to Dip ‘n Drip.
Buster and Brutus
It’s ridiculously satisfying as characters slowly grow and emerge from the liquid wax. Originally small silver-plated pots but I’m not sure what for. Now ready for action at the table, both delighted to serve you salt and pepper.

It’s a great opportunity while photographing work to see how pieces play off each other. Even during this process, it’s a moment to see more potential. Most images don’t work however, now and then one will hit you and trigger a new thought or idea. I enjoy these moments very much.
It now opens up a new area of the table for me and that’s the role of Conversation Pieces, it’s time for a comeback!

Flamin’ Bunnies
Actual failures, these remnants of exploded and shattered bunnies were sitting on my bench for months. These hopeless souls ended up being dipped in the wax. Copper flames now shooting up from their heads, these countryside pests are now finished off. However, like animal trophies, individual plinths elevate them slightly from the ground.

High Society
A series of candlesticks intended to tease out new characteristics hiding within these tired and redundant sticks. Built from the material they intend to hold. Wax is used the same way as to make a candle: by repeatedly dipping.
JACKED UP
Elevated by building up layer after layer of wax. The forms grow organically and the old formal element of the candle stick rises even higher. Are they growing out of the table or have they been dug up and uprooted? Grounding and highlighting where metals come from the earth.

Three Widows
The graphite finish ‘shadows’ the work in a sooty, earthy powder. Somewhat reminiscent of Wedgewood Jasperware these jugs are stark and animated like gallions on the sea by their extended billowing skirts. Good afternoon: Mrs Birdwhistle, Miss Loughty & Ms Pussett.

Dip ‘n Drip
Here is a video showing the process. A constant act of dipping into a vat of liquid wax and applying some pressure if required. Someow it’s utterly boring in its repeatitiveness however, also magical in how it grows. This collection was made exclusively for Design Miami 2023.
Dip ‘n Drip Video 3 minutes long.
